2025 February - My student, Miguel Eduardo Salazar Aurich, successfully defended his master's thesis titled "Effect of Lipid Composition and Calcium Ions on the Structure and Function of SARS-CoV-2 Fusion Peptides." This defense is particularly special to me, as Eduardo is my first graduate student to complete his degree. Congratulations, Eduardo! Well deserved!
2025 January - My PhD student, Fadi Simon, has been selected through the internal PGCN-PDSE-2024-3 call for a 9-month research internship abroad. He will receive a CAPES PDSE scholarship (sandwich PhD program) to work in the group of Prof. Tuomas Knowles at the University of Cambridge, a leading expert in liquid-liquid phase separation studies.

2024 October - AWARDS! My undergraduate student, Eduarda Maia, received an honorable mention for one of the best posters presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society (SBBf), held in São Paulo, Brazil. Meanwhile, my PhD student, Marcos Hernandez, was awarded 3rd place in the prestigious Carlos Chagas Prize, granted by the Brazilian Biophysical Society during the same conference. Congratulations to both for their dedication and outstanding work!

Professor Luis gave a plenary lecture titled "Structure and Function of SARS-CoV-2 Membrane Fusion Peptides," while Fadi presented a poster titled "Nicotine Induces Changes in the Thermodynamics of the Phase Coexistence of Pulmonary Surfactant Model Membranes."

2021 December - Julio visited the Biophysics and Structural Biology Group at the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Carlos, Brazil. He spent a week learning the skills to prepare peptide-free and peptide-decorated lipid bilayer samples for spectroscopic and calorimetric studies as part of his undergraduate research in our lab.

2021 October - Luis and his undergraduated students Ana Luiza and Júlio Cézar attended the 20th IUPAB Congress, 45th Annual SBBf Meeting, and 50th Annual SBBq Meeting and presented a poster entitled "Lipid bilayer membrane as a possible target for inhibition of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike-mediated membrane fusion process". Luis also gave a talk at the meeting about the same research.
