How can counseling help me?
Your counselor will work with you to identify your personal goals, and create a personalized counseling intervention that fit for you and your goals. The counselor-in-charge will work with you hand-in-hand to assist you reach your personal goals.
During counseling, you might be offered tools and techniques for navigating your thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences. It will often involve things from discovering things about yourself, exploring different perspectives on your experiences, making changes with unhelpful thinking patterns, processing difficult experiences, learning healthy coping strategies to acquiring new skills.
If I avail the counseling service, can anyone find out about it?
We at the Guidance, Counseling and Career Services Office follow confidentiality, which means we cannot release information about you except under certain conditions. If you have questions about confidentiality, please discusss them with your counselor-in-charge.
I want to know about mental health disorders, does my counselor assess and diagnose?
A counselor is a qualified professional who uses methods to help students manage and cope with mental and emotional issues. Although your counselors are knowledgeable about mental health disorders, doing assessment, diagnosis, medication are beyond their line of expertise. If you wish to seek for further assessment, we provide referral service to other mental health professional.
What kind of problems are included in the scope of guidance counseling?
You can receive assistance with stress management, emotion regulation, academic issues, career decision making, relationship conflicts, grief/loss, anxiety, sexual identity issues, suicidality and a variety of other challenges.
When should I consider seeking for professional help?
You should consider a seeking a counselor's help if you experience distress to the extent that it interferes with your daily activities; If this concern has caused your quality of life to decrease and/or affected your physical and mental health, school and relationships; Also, if you're struggling with the issue and takes up most of your time and has made you want to avoid others; And/or if this concern could cause harm to yourself or others.
