Just what is STEAM? And what are Makerspaces?
STEAM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. A Makerspace is an area that is designated for the creations of those ideas that are born out of STEAM.

Why is STEAM and giving all students access to makerspace important?
The creations that children collaboratively construct in these types of learning environments foster growth in areas that are academic and non-traditionally academic. This environment encourages all types of learners to stretch their minds and imaginations. Children can work in a hands-on, minds-on kind of way, and in the collaborative model that defines 21st century work and problem solving.

In a Makerspace you may find anything from cardboard tube bridge models, to 3D printer items created from coding, to artistic designs of clothing using a sewing machine. This space is adaptive, and constantly changing to meet the needs of the creators.

Who teaches STEAM? The classroom teacher or the librarian or media specialist can teach it. A parent volunteer whose career makes them an expert in a particular topic of STEAM can teach it. Enrichment or Kindergarten teachers can teach it. Students can teach it to one another. There is usually an activity, problem or goal to reach designated at the start of a project that begins in the science, art, or math class setting. Or it could be initiated by a student group inspired by a problem or goal that motivates them to engage in a more in-depth study of hands on learning.

We will be collecting these items throughout the year. Students may bring the items into school in a bag or bin clearly marked with the donation item name and drop off outside the Library.
