8thGradeMath is an app that can be downloaded on almost any device. The website consists of every 8th grade topic that is taught. This app is a great resource for teachers, students and parents, as every question available on the app is connected to the Common Core State Standard for that mathematical objective.
The website allows students to go through different topics and answer different questions, all with varying levels of difficulty, in order to practice, review, and learn, topics that they are expected to know after 8th grade.
Although the app described here is called "8thGradeMath", versions of this app exist for almost any grade level, K-9, and versions for high school are available as well.
Research has shown how math apps on iPads and other devices can help increase academic achievement.
This app is available through Apple. According to the Editor, " This app presents scenarios that model movement and provide different representations of functions on a graph (while illustrating the motion on the graph)" (Rhine, 2014). The app focuses on allowing students to follow procedures, however, while going through the procedure to complete the games, they will make connections about the relationships between the axis and the influence the different variables has on the graph. With this app, students can draw two different actions, and watch how they appear on a graph, and use that information in comparison. Students can go on a bike journey and see how the graph changes as they go up and down hills, and then answer questions about how the variables affected the graph. Because of this technology and the real life context. Students can see the connection between the real life situation and the mathematical concepts that change the graphs slope, starting point etc. These skills are crucial in conceptual understanding, which makes this app useful in and outside of a the classroom.

iTooch Middle School is an app for iPhone or Android that provides students with practice of 8th grade mathematics concepts. Students can work on their knowledge of linear functions by answering questions on the app. This app helps students gain a deeper conceptual understanding of linear functions by providing questions that are not simply recall. When going through the app, a variety of questions, ranging in cognitive demand appeared. The questions build from recall, to application, which is where conceptual understanding of functions gets tested. As an example, in the screenshot below, one can see how a student would have to apply their knowledge of slope to the context of the question, which would display a deeper understanding of linear functions than a simple question asking students to find the rise/run. Teachers can also download this app and use it to track their students' progress.
Although the above example is focused on middle school content, that app is available for multiple grade levels, making it useful for elementary and middle school teachers.
