What is a college peer mentoring program?
The Center for Experimental and Applied Economics mentoring program offers a career development perspective on the skills necessary to understand and work in the general fields of applied economics, agricultural and food economics, resource economics, environmental economics, agribusiness, or government sectors of the economy.
Our researchers and professional staff know navigating the winding, complicated, and uncertain path from undergraduate and graduate school to a career can be completely overwhelming. Offering a student-centered environment, our faculty, staff, and students work as partners to create a comfortable place where professional development happens naturally through a variety of events and enrichment activities all designed to navigate early career growth.
Commitment is Key
For the mentoring network to succeed, participants must be committed. Our participants show up for one another and understand that modeling leadership is key to the effectiveness of our program. All new participants begin as mentees and after the first year become either a mentor (through training) or a member of our peer advisory council, the PAC. The peer advisory council determines programming and serves as both a mentor and on the PAC in some cases. In year three and four, participants become eligible for our mentors-in-residence program. Mentors-in-residence commit to mentoring and organizing activities for the program. Additionally, any information that participants provide about their concerns is kept confidential and not relayed to other students. This setting allows everyone to be comfortable with asking questions and getting real answers from both peers and our professionals that are invited to participate in our activities and panel discussions.
