Chateau de Sable is a children's clothing company catering to ages 1 months to 14 years. The company was created in 2001 by Stéphanie Lamaire, a French clothing designer. The company provides high quality, comfortable clothing for an affordable price and actively steers away from the fast fashion world. They strive to make timeless pieces that can be worn time and time again and can be passed down, all while appearing aesthetically pleasing. Chateau de Sable believes that kids should dress and play as kids as long as possible. This contrasts many brands today that tend to make children's clothes that mimic adult trends especially within girl's clothing all while ignoring quality.
I've been able to learn and develop new soft skills such as adapting to using new forms of communication to be able to keep in touch with my supervisor. I often had to adjust to not hearing from my boss for several days to a week as she was not in the office at the time of my internship. This allowed me to become more resourceful and independent in my role as I often had to self-delegate tasks and projects.
I contributed to the new layout and displays of the stores. With the freedom I was given, I had free reign to try my ideas to improve the flow of the store to provide a smoother shopping experience for the customers. The new layout also allowed for sales associates to spark up a conversation and assist customers easier. I also taught sales associates how to create tabletop and wall hanging displays in a way that appeals to the brand's aesthetic.
I was hired by Château de Sable as the visual merchandiser. On my first week I explored and examined each stores' layouts and organized my ideas of what could be changed. That same week I assisted on a photoshoot for an up and coming line, managing wardrobe changes and helping set scenes. As I continued to get familiar with the company, I gained more inside knowledge of the stores' operations as I shadowed store managers at each store location and outlet location. I also gathered intel on other stores to see how we faced up to the competition and gain some ideas on what the company can improve on. I gathered my findings and ideas into a presentation format to distribute to store managers. I was also able to apply those proposed ideas in the store myself and make adjustments based on sales associates observations. Toward the end of my time at Chateau de Sable, I was able to work with the sales associates to make sure they understood the guidelines I created and how they can implement them on their own.
Running a small business is extremely hard work and everyone must be completely committed to their work and helping the business thrive. Operating a small business is time consuming and take a great deal of effort. Everyone in the office takes on multiple roles and sales associates are often working open to close, 4 or 5 days a week in order to maintain the business in an affordable way. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the commitment and effort that goes into working for a small business and being able to explore a new career opportunity that I hadn't considered before.
