Founded in 2010 by Rachel Lim, Love, Bonito began as a blogshop in Singapore called BonitoChico, selling pre-owned apparel. After realizing most global apparel brands were focused on western women’s needs, Rachael decided to start her own fashion brand with Asian women in mind. Love, Bonito was born in 2010 and rapidly climbed to the top of women’s fashion in Southeast Asia. Today, Love, Bonito focuses on functional, well-crafted, fashion-forward styles for everyday women of all ages. The company has expanded it's reach to all of southeast Asia, looking to take on the West next.
This internship experience at Love, Bonito has taught me many aspects of running a clothing brand, especially one in early - booming, but growing stages. I’ve gotten to work alongside Fashion Designers and Product Developers alike, learning trend-focused design as well as the longevity, functionality, and comfortability that Love, Bonito prioritizes in design. I’ve gained a better understanding of designing for a diverse customer base, addressing the issues of everyday women through design, and identifying my own needs in clothing which greatly relates to our consumers.
In the two months I’ve been at Love, Bonito, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute in many ways such as assisting in and photographing fittings, where Product Developers and Fashion Designers assess the design and functionality of a garment. These fittings have been pivotal in my understanding of customer sentiment, product development, and the drawing board to market pipeline.
I’ve also been able to be a part of buying sessions, dressing models and putting together styled looks to show the internal buying team, who decide what will be put on the market. After buying sessions, the buying team, designers, and often CEO meet to look at the variety of color and fabric options for each style and choose which colorways will be bought and put into stores. I enjoy sitting in on color-pickings and gaining a better understanding of how teams decide what consumers will want and buy, even a year out.
Under designers and product developers, I’ve been able to expand upon my technical skills such as using software like photoshop to create prints, adapt colorways, and alter garments.
Lookbook Styling
One of my favorite projects was being put in charge of the styling lookbooks for the buying sessions. We get to have fun with the lookbooks and show the buyers how each garment can be paired depending on it’s occasion. I was able to work on the lookbook for March Core buying which is a smaller collection with more focus on functionality, as well as the capsule collection for January which has more than 80 styles separated into festive and non-festive for Chinese New Year. In order to execute styling shoots, I would prepare a week or two in advance, creating Miro boards, finding inspiration photos, and styling looks consisting of the collection styles and pairing pieces. I would also execute the photoshoots, lining up looks, instructing and dressing the models, as well as taking, editing, and printing the final photos with the help of my peer intern.
July '25 Designing
Towards the end of my time at Love, Bonito, I was asked to help create mock-ups for the July '25 Capsule Collection. I was supplied with inspiration boards and techniques they wanted to include for the collection and was tasked with sketching and draping styles of my choosing to present at the Designer Kickoff for June/July '25. This was a really fun project for me because it used skills I'm confident in and enjoy, as well as gave me the chance to get creative with a set goal. I draped a few different silhouettes for the designers to choose from and I could possibly see my designs in next summer's collection, which is very exciting!
Packing Project
Besides styling, I was able to assist product developers on a packing project they began recently which aims to pack and send garments in the most efficient and least compromising way. I was to measure, fold, and test different sized poly-bags for a variety of garments, specifically coats. This project came about when there were complaints of the clothing becoming creased or wrinkly upon arrival at the customers house, due to the packing. Working on projects like these help me understand the sides of a fashion brand you don’t often consider as a designer.
My time at Love, Bonito definitely transformed my view of design. I have a better understanding of consumer's needs and how to meet them, as well as how product development is a crucial factor of creating clothing for a mass market. I really enjoyed the work environment such as the women-centered office, communal lunches everyday, and recreational activities that encouraged employees to socialize and communicate. Love, Bonito is a brand that fulfills their company values in and outside the office and I would love to work for them in the future, if they choose to expand to the United States.
