Students brought their own plastic water bottle and learned how to upcycle it into a pot for their new succulent.
In the past, we have piloted our new mini compost bin program. At the beginning of the year, we lent out bins to students who can then decorate it and keep it in their dorms/apartments for the school year. This allows them to easily store and transport food scraps from their living quarters to the compost bins in the garden.
We invited speakers from organizations on and off campus to talk to students about how they help combat food insecurity, what resources they provide for food insecure students, and how students can get involved.
A chill event where students got to take a break from the stress of studying while painting rocks and chatting with friends.
We invited speakers from the Triton Food Pantry and CalFresh to talk about food insecurity and how they are a resource for food insecure students on campus. At the end, students got to participate in a Kahoot quiz and possibly win Target gift cards.
Each member chose a type of produce such as green onion, celery, potato, carrot, or avocado and experimented with regrowing it at home. We then hosted an event to show students our findings and taught them how they could regrow their own food scraps at home. We also gave them an introduction to hydroponics which is a method of growing plants without soil. You can find the recording and the slides in our Facebook page!
Students were able to submit art designs for our planter beds, compost bins, and water tote. The winners won their choice of either a Wacom drawing tablet or an equivalent gift card.
