The Village at Pepper Canyon and The Rita Atkinson Residences nurture a cohesive community within UCSD’s unique college system where residents will develop a stronger sense of place and belonging to the University among their peers associated with all 8 colleges. Through their residential experience, residents will engage in opportunities for personal and social development that foster meaningful connection and networks of support through points of transition as a means of reinforcing residents’ foundation for success.
What are The Village at Pepper Canyon and The Rita Atkinson Residences?
The Village and The Rita are housing facilities that do not have a College-affiliated Residence Life Staff. Rather, the Residence Life Staff here is part of HDH Residential Experience, and as such is a direct operation of Housing*Dining*Hospitality at UC San Diego. They have residents that belong to every College on campus. This Fall 2024 we look forward to launching Pepper Canyon West Living and Learning Neighborhood which will provide approximately 1,300 single-occupancy rooms for transfer and upper-division students.
What does an RA at The Village or The Rita do?
The Village (Pepper Canyon Apartments, Matthews Apartments) and The Rita utilize a curricular approach (see video) to promote student development and growth among our 2300 residents. The primary way this is accomplished is through intentional conversations, facilitated by RAs, in order to build individual relationships with residents and support them in their goals. Here, programming is a secondary strategy that is primarily used as a means to develop community in a social setting and encourage building relationships with other residents. As a result, RAs at The Village and The Rita take on much more a mentor-like role than a program-oriented one.
Who are the students that live at The Village and The Rita?
While the student population we serve continues to change year to year, The Village and The Rita traditionally house incoming transfer students, returning transfer students, as well as traditional returning students.
