The Weekend
On Saturday, we visited the San Diego Zoo and had lots of fun visiting the different attractions. Some students went back for family weekend, so unfortunately, they couldn't see the cool animals. However, on Sunday, all the students were able to attend a UCSD admission information session, as well as a COSMOS Tradition: Casino Night, during the evening. We played Blackjack, Texas Hold'em Poker, and other card games and drank some mocktails mixed/served by the RAs.
On Monday we kicked off our project for this week: a mini-sculpture containing at least one sensor-automated motor. Students planned their sculptures in teams and attempted to model their ideas in Working Model 2D or prototype them in the lab.
In the morning, we got to see everyone's ethics videos and then vote for the three best. Students also presented their ideas in two separate groups and their presentations were critiqued by Mr. Rowe. The afternoon was a continuation of Monday's activities, modeling and building their sculpture.
Almost the entire Wednesday was spent working on sculptures. We also spent the first part of the afternoon presenting Working Model (WM2D) simulations of some sculpture ideas.
The students were treated with a "Women-in-STEM" zoom panel in the morning, educating them about the obstacles and opportunities women face in the STEM field. In the afternoon, they worked diligently on their mini-sculptures, with multiple teams having fully functional sculptures by the end of the day.
The morning was spent touring the MAE machine shop and controls lab. Students got to see manual and CNC machine tools as well as a variety of test equipment and demonstrations used by USCD mechanical and aerospace engineering students.
In the afternoon, students spent some time finishing up their sculptures, then presented their final product to the class.
After returning to class, students were told that they couldn't go out during inside time on account of an Instagram account violating COSMOS administrative policies being discovered by the SRAs.
