On Saturday, Cluster 1 through 6 went to the La Jolla Shores Beach. Students were able to have fun at the beach, swimming, having snacks, playing volleyball/football, etc. They were also allowed to do some shopping at the nearby shops and restaurants.
As a new week begins, the students wrapped up their pendulum clock projects . They also arranged themselves into teams and took on their first challenge together: The Water Balloon Drop. Each team utilized straws, rubber bands, tape, and three pieces of paper to protect a water balloon from a drop from the third floor!
The students kicked off their Tuesday with an oral presentation about their balloon drop experiment from the day before. Afterwards, the students learned about the dynamics of falling objects and built sculptures to demonstrate those principles.
In the morning, students again received a lecture on physics, this time on the parabolic arc described by objects that are dropped off a ramp and the mechanics of springs and bounces. Like Tuesday, they built sculptures and collected data to demonstrate these principles.
In the afternoon, students were introduced to the technology they would use to electronically automate their sculptures: LEGO NXT parts and the RobotC coding language. They were given the challenge of moving a motor with an inertial load precisely 180 degrees.
Students spent the first part of the morning riveted to a COSMOS alumni panel zoom meeting. Then, they were given time outside or in the computer lab to work on their ethics project, or if not done, their clock project from last week.
In the afternoon, students entered the computer lab to get some experience in RobotC once more, this time programming sensors to respond to a variety of inputs.
