Design Studio
This week, Cluster 2 students started the fabrication of their first project: the pendulum clock.
Under the supervision of the TAs and shop mentor Chris Cassidy, the students assembled their clocks in the design studio. Using newly introduced techniques such as drilling, reaming, countersinking, press-fits, tapping, and laser cutting, students were able to work on their pendulums throughout the week.
Computer Lab
In the afternoons, the students accessed the computer lab. They designed and modeled their escapement wheel and pendulum with Autodesk Fusion 360.
Students were also introduced to Working Model 3D, a simulation program for mechanical systems.
Classroom
Despite some early difficulties involving a bungled Zoom meeting on lab safety (which barely pertained to our cluster), the class soon got off to a fine start. Students attended lectures by Professor de Callafon, teacher-fellow Mr. Rowe, and TAs.
We learned about the principles we were to implement in the shop, as well as physics concepts to help us predict the behavior of our pendulums.
Residential Life / COSMOlympics
After class, students gathered together to brainstorm ideas and prepare props for the COSMOlympic skit. The students based their skit on "Dora the Explorer," and made cardboard props accordingly.
