Native American Heritage Month
December is the Universal Human Rights Month! “Human Rights Month is about acknowledging that people of different races, religions, cultures, and beliefs are still just that: people.” (Dignity & Respect Campaign). According to the United Nations, human rights are “rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of sex, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status”. December 10 commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948, written by people of different backgrounds to create a standard of how people should be treated. This is the first international document with a dedicated statement about human rights.
What you can do this month:
Reread the Bill of Rights and think about what freedom means to you.
Volunteer at a local human rights organization
Ask your library staff to learn about new cultures.
Donate money or resources to human rights organizations.
Speak up for those who are hurting in your community.
Talk and learn from others who are different from you.
Watch documentaries or videos that support human rights.
