Sexual health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, encompassing physical, emotional, and social dimensions of sexuality. However, sexual dysfunction can significantly impact an individual's quality of life and intimate relationships. According to the DSM-5, sexual dysfunction categories include desire, orgasm, excitement or arousal difficulties, and pain disorder. Sexual dysfunction is defined as “a difficulty during any stage of normal sexual activity experienced by an individual or couple for a minimum of 6 months (7). In the context of Iranian women, sexual dysfunction is a pressing issue that warrants attention and exploration.

A study revealed that a staggering 75% of married Iranian women experience Female Sexual Dysfunction, indicating an urgent need to address this issue (7). Furthermore, McCool’s findings highlight that over 64% of infertile Iranian women report sexual dysfunction, indicating a complex interplay between fertility issues and sexual health (13). Within the sexual well-being framework, Iranian women’s experiences of sexual dysfunction can be understood through multiple dimensions. These include physical health concerns, such as reproductive health and sexual function, as well as emotional and social factors, including cultural beliefs, societal attitudes, and access to sexual health resources (16). Understanding these dimensions is crucial for developing effective interventions and support systems for Iranian women facing sexual health challenges.
Despite growing awareness of sexual dysfunction in Iranian women, there remains a gap in understanding the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon. While studies have highlighted the prevalence of sexual dysfunction, there is a need for further research to explore the complex interplay of cultural, social, and individual factors shaping Iranian women’s sexual health experiences.
Our thesis asserts that Iranian women face significant adversities due to their multiple minority statuses and cultural beliefs, contributing to their higher risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction. By examining the intersection of cultural norms, societal expectations, and individual experiences, we aim to shed light on the underlying factors driving sexual dysfunction among Iranian women and advocate for culturally sensitive intervention to promote sexual well-being.
