Dr. Kimberly Samaniego

Director of MDTP, Director Math Testing Placement

Kimberly Samaniego is the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP) and the Director of Math Testing and Placement (MTP) at UC San Diego. Kim earned her B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Sacramento in 1993 and her doctorate in Teaching and Learning from UCSD in 2013. Kim’s research interests focus on teacher learning, educational reforms, and equitable teaching practices in mathematics classrooms. Kim’s 20 years of experience as a secondary mathematics teacher and department chair, instructor of preservice secondary mathematics teachers, and teacher-trainer inform her dual roles and strengthen her ability to fuse her personal goals of providing access to equitable learning opportunities to students from all backgrounds with MDTP’s mission of supporting secondary mathematics educators in their work to prepare all students to succeed in college-level mathematics.

Dr. Emiliano Gómez

Emiliano studied mathematics and chemistry at the University of Maryland, and then went to graduate school at UC Berkeley, where he finished his PhD in mathematics in 2000. Since 2001 he has been the site director for MDTP at UC Berkeley, where he also lectures in the Department of Mathematics and works as the mathematician for the Lawrence Hall of Science. He has designed and led many professional development workshops for K-12 mathematics teachers and has also organized and presented sessions at several assessment conferences for mathematics educators. Emiliano is a member of the MDTP Workgroup.

Carol Treglio

MDTP Outreach Facilitator

Carol has supported MDTP as the Outreach Facilitator at UCSD since 2018, working with districts and groups of teachers to help them with analyzing their MDTP data and thinking through next steps. She worked with San Diego Unified as a classroom teacher, department chair, a coach, a professional developer and a curriculum writer as well as an instructor of presevice secondary mathematics teachers. She retired from the San Diego County Office of Education where she was the director of a math/science grant and led many modified lesson studies involving math and science teachers. Through her work, she continues to maintain that It is not what content we teach but how students engage with the concepts that leads to success.

Carol is an active member of both GSDMC and of CMCS and regularly presents at GSDMC, CMCS, CMCN and NCTM. She is currently CMCS President.

Pat King

MDTP Outreach Facilitator

Pat has worked with MDTP since 2001, both as a Workgroup member and now as the Northern CA Outreach Facilitator at UC Davis. She worked as a mathematics educator with the Davis Joint Unified School District for 33 years as a classroom teacher, department chair, mentor and in professional development. During that time, Pat was also actively involved with the College Preparatory Math Project as a writer, workshop leader and Regional Coordinator.

Pat continues to serve teachers and their students through her work with MDTP writing, workshops and conferences.
