Professor Haiwen Luan
Principal Investigator
Haiwen Luan joined the MAE faculty at UC San Diego as an assistant professor in Spring 2024. He was formerly a postdoctoral scholar at Northwestern University’s Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics, working with Prof. John A. Rogers. He earned his PhD in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University in 2019 under the guidance of Prof. Yonggang Huang, receiving the Ted Belytschko Outstanding Research Award in the same year. Haiwen holds a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering, also from Northwestern University, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Tongji University, China. He has co-authored 70 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Science Advances, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Advanced Materials, Extreme Mechanics Letters, and the Journal of Applied Mechanics. Haiwen was recognized in the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 China 2023 list.
Graduate Students
Zhihan Zhang holds a master’s degree in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a bachelor’s degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. His research interests span multiscale and interdisciplinary topics in thermal, fluidic, mechanical, and biological systems, including flexible and wearable electronics, 3D bio-interfaces, and programmable mesoscale structures. Outside of research, he enjoys weightlifting, dancing, and playing the bass.

Haoyu Luo holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Southeast University. His work focuses on bio-integrated systems and biomedical sensing, with interests in signal processing and neural system design. Outside of research, he enjoys swimming, hiking, and off-road exploration.

Minyu Xu is a M.S. student in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. Her research interests include soft materials, electronic skin sensors, and multimodal sensing systems. Her current work focuses on soft, wearable devices that interface with the body to monitor and modulate healing.
