Course Description - Analytical study of stresses and deformations and their application to the design of mechanical and structural elements subjected to static loads.
Topics include Concepts of stress and strain, Hooke’s law, Axial loading of bars, Torsion of circular shafts, Shearing and normal stresses in beam bending, Deflections in beams, Statically determinate and indeterminate problems, Combined loading, Principal stresses and design criteria, Buckling of columns, etc.
MAE 233A - Fracture Mechanics Fall 2025
Topics include 1) Stress singularity, asymptotic K field (near tip field), stress intensity factor, fracture failure criterion; 2) K fields for three fracture modes, crack tip displacements, similarity between 3D and 2D fracture mechanics; 3) Energy release rate, fracture failure criterion based on energy approach, J-integral; 4) Elastic-plastic fracture mechanics: crack tip plasticity, Dugdale-Barrenblatt model, HRR field for power-law hardening materials; 5) Dynamic fracture mechanics: stationary crack tip, propagating crack tip; 6) Interfacial fracture mechanics: K fields, energy release rate and J-integral; 7) Computational fracture mechanics; 8) Fatigue.
