Since the pandemic, lectures have been held online. The Zoom platform is utilized for teaching and learning. There can be some improvements of the platform for increased productivity and interaction.
The chat in the Zoom interface moves quickly and sometimes questions are lost within a sea of comments. Professors may miss a question that a student has and students may not want to ask in front of an entire classroom.
Another problem is that zoom links can sometimes get lost if it is not saved into a calendar and it is a hassle to dig through emails to look for a meeting.
For the user: easier organization of zoom links and increase interaction between students and professors
For the app: increase user usability and interaction
For the business: improve competitive edge and retention of users
I conducted a competitive analysis between Zoom and its competitors who have similar features of video calls and meetings. This SWOT analysis will assist in further steps like creating a competitive edge for Zoom that other platforms do not have.
The beginning process involved sketching out screens of how the redesign would look like. The top row is the initial idea of a question queue where users can submit and organize questions in a hierarchy. Moreover, the middle row is the broadcast idea where broadcasted messages are also saved within the chat. Lastly, the final row displays a rough sketch of what the calendar would look like within Zoom.
After receiving an initial round of user testing, we utilized information from participants and made improvements. Instead of a large question queue that blocks the screen, we decided to minimize the question queue and have a scroll-through option. We also decided to incorporate more features into the calendar like customization and edit meetings.
During the design process, my team and I decided to incorporate solutions to problems that users had. These included creating a calendar within Zoom to keep track of meeting links with the option to set reminders and a question queue to allow users to ask questions and upvote.
My team and I created a style guide with the typography and color palette compatible with the Zoom interface. This aligns the designs with the platform so users can experience a streamlined and simple interface that matches their needs.
The redesign has a calendar homepage and a list of upcoming meetings on the first screen. Moreover, there is a question queue that allows users to ask questions, upvote other questions, and categorize questions by topics. This improves organization and increases communication between the speaker and participants.
The redesign idea received great feedback from users who expressed their wishes for a calendar that is specifically for Zoom. Furthermore, users also highlighted that a question queue is innovative and they have not noticed other platforms which have one yet.
I assisted with competitive analysis, final deliverables, wireframing of the homepages, low-fi, hi-fi, mood board, style guide, and creating the core features.
