2024 Instructional Assistant
Teaching Symposium
Wednesday, September 25, 2024 • 9AM-2PM
All sessions will be held via Zoom.
Welcome to starting your teaching journey.
We are excited to partner with and support you throughout this exciting and enriching journey. At UC San Diego, Teaching Assistants, Instructional Apprentices, Tutors, and Readers are all Instructional Assistants (IAs). Being an IA is crucial to both the undergraduate student experience and graduate student professional development. Join us on Zoom for our annual teaching symposium, featuring:
A keynote panel with experienced IAs to discuss how to prepare without over-preparing and practical ideas based on your questions
Kick-off session to share practical plans for leading sections
Interactive workshops with strategies to engage students, and
Micro-learning sessions (new this year!). In these concise, focused 20-minute segments, you’ll gain practical insights into grading equitably and efficiently, supporting students during office hours, cross-cultural communication insights, managing your time as an instructional assistant, teaching in a remote environment, and more.
At this symposium, we aim for you to:
Get the support you need via synchronous and asynchronous resources for new IAs at UC San Diego.
Explore strategies for your role as an IA, including how to grade fairly and efficiently, support students in office hours, and run engaging and inclusive discussion sections and labs. Customize your support by quickly finding and utilizing those resources that are most relevant to your position.
Prepare and practice your skills by applying promising teaching strategies to preparing useful materials for your IA role and in real-life applications during foundational workshops.
