The Loft at UC San Diego
Tickets start at $25
UCSD Students: Free tickets via SSO
Described by Wall Street Journal as “among modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” NYC-born, Tamil Nadu-raised, ganavya moves as a sonic shapeshifter. A vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and unabashed wanderer, she wields a voice that’s equal parts lullaby and lightning bolt, drawing from a deep well of spiritual blueprints passed through generations. Raised on pilgrimage trails with soundtracks of harikathā, she turned her childhood of storytelling into a life of fluid creation.
Her latest album, Nilam follows last year’s Daughter Of A Temple, which was recognized as one of 2024’s Top 10 Best Global Albums by The Guardian, who praised ganavya’s ability to harness “the power of communal harmony to touch something deeper than song.” Co-produced by Nils Frahm at LEITER Studio in Berlin’s Funkhaus complex, the new album by “the singer whose work,” according to the New York Times, “feels like prayer…with listeners hanging onto her every word,” is out on vinyl and all digital platforms.

The McNair Program is currently accepting applications for the 2025-26 program, which begins in winter quarter and concludes with a paid 8-week Summer Research Program. The initial application deadline is November 3. We will continue to accept applications while we review those submitted by November 3 and will do so until we have formed our full cohort. The application can be found on our website. The program provides faculty-mentored research opportunities for undergraduates who are first-generation college students or members of groups under-represented in graduate education. Please read below to find out more.
About the McNair Program at UC San Diego: The McNair Program is a federally funded program that primarily serves first-generation college students from low-income households. We will also consider applications from students who are members of groups currently under-represented in graduate education. Participants must have junior or senior standing by the beginning of winter quarter (90 or more units including AP units and transfer credits). The program, which is in its 37th year of continuous funding, aims to prepare students to apply for and to succeed in doctoral programs in their chosen fields of study. Over 180 of our program alumni have earned doctoral degrees, and dozens more are currently enrolled at top-tier graduate programs around the country. Program participants work with faculty research mentors to conduct research during the winter and spring quarters and during an 8-week Summer Research Program (SRP). Participants in the McNair SRP receive a research stipend of $2,800 in addition to campus housing (or a housing allowance to help with off-campus housings costs), and a free GRE prep course. Additional benefits accrue to alumni in the form of application fee waivers to graduate degree programs around the country. To find out more about the program, please visit our website or talk with our staff at the Undergraduate Research Hub offices in Student Center B on campus.
The McNair Program Call for Applications: The application portal is open now. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation (new transfer students usually obtain a letter from a professor from their previous institution). To find out more about how to apply, see our website. To be eligible for the program, students should have junior or senior standing by winter quarter 2025 and should be either (or both) first-generation college students from low-income households and/or members of ethnic groups under-represented in US higher education. If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact Dr. Thomas Brown (tkbrown@ucsd.edu). If you are not eligible for the McNair Program, I encourage you to explore other programs at the Undergraduate Research Hub, including the Faculty Mentor Program, TRELS, and UC Scholars. Information on these and our other programs can be found at https://ugresearch.ucsd.edu/.
Seeking student to canvas at $25/hr for the upcoming special election in November. HIGL144GS: The Singapore Model of Leadership, a Global Seminar course I’ll be teaching in Singapore in Summer 2026
Interdisciplinary by nature, the course explores leadership as a culturally constructed and historically grounded phenomenon, using Singapore as a case study to explore themes of governance, identity, and multiculturalism in a postcolonial context.
The course challenges students to consider how leadership and power operate within multiethnic societies—specifically how the Singaporean state institutionalizes race, manages diversity, and constructs national identity through a framework of 'meritocracy' and global capitalism.
I hope it might align well with Ethnic Studies’ focus on colonial legacies, race and power, and transnational formations, while also encouraging critical engagement with how race and governance intersect beyond the U.S.

Develop a successful Priorities program that could be implemented in schools and other educational settings.
As part of participation, you will complete a screening questionnaire, participate in four sessions, complete surveys, and an optional follow-up.

Andres Lemons, our USS immigration attorney is now available to do consultations on Parole in Place (PIP). The Biden Administration policy provides eligible spouses and step children of a U.S citizen who came into the country without authorization by an immigration officer a pathway to lawful permanent residency without having to leave the country. More information about the policy and eligibility criteria can be found below.
Please direct students to make an appointment with Andres using the appointment link on the USS website (uss.ucsd.edu) and select “Consultation about New Executive Action for Spouses and Stepchildren of U.S. Citizens.”
A key goal of the USS and of our Immigration Legal Services is to help eligible undocumented students acquire a pathway to residency or citizenship. There are several current federal policies in place that can potentially benefit students and possibly put them on this pathway.
