The UC Berkeley Comparative Literature department is proud to announce that the call for submissions is open for our 13th Annual Undergraduate Symposium, “Inhuman Imaginaries” on April 11, 2026. We are reaching out now with the hope that your students may consider submitting their work to us!
With this theme, we question the human, which is almost universally considered to be the heart of the literary arts; the eldest and favorite child of the humanities. This year, the Symposium invites submitters to “think with the inhuman as an analytic,” as Kathryn Yusoff does in her book A Billion Black Anthropocenes or None. Throughout history, there have always been those on the margins who are not allowed the label of human; people of color, colonized subjects, queer people, gender minorities, and disabled people are just some examples of those that have been considered inhuman. Additionally, as Donna Haraway puts it in A Cyborg Manifesto, “By the late twentieth century in U.S. scientific culture, the boundary between human and animal is thoroughly breached” and “Our machines are disturbingly lively, and we ourselves frighteningly inert.” Thus, in the midst of climate collapse, neocolonialism, fervent genocide denial, ongoing racial hatred, and a burgeoning reliance on generative artificial intelligence in culture and society, we find ourselves at a moment where the category of human appears to be rapidly crumbling. We’re looking for submissions that take on the perspective of inhumans and those excluded from humanity.
Through the symposium, the committee aims to provide a forum for undergraduates to present and discuss their research among peers, graduate students, professors, and the public. Past symposia have featured keynote speakers Poloumi Saha, Ramsey McGlazer, Karl Britto, Judith Butler, Timothy Hampton, and Eric Naiman, as well as undergraduate participants from around the world. This year, we are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be Professor Amanda Jo Goldstein of the English Department.
We ask for analytical papers or abstracts for consideration. All accepted applicants will be expected to prepare a 15-20 minute presentation of their work to be delivered at the conference. The deadline for submission is February 8th, 2026 at 11:59 (PST). Please submit your work to this Google form, also found on our website.
Next year marks the 250 anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Attached is a call for proposals for the Shattuck Colonial American History symposium. The symposium will take place on March 18-20, 2026 on the campus of California State University, Sacramento. HIGL144GS: The Singapore Model of Leadership, a Global Seminar course I’ll be teaching in Singapore in Summer 2026
Interdisciplinary by nature, the course explores leadership as a culturally constructed and historically grounded phenomenon, using Singapore as a case study to explore themes of governance, identity, and multiculturalism in a postcolonial context.
The course challenges students to consider how leadership and power operate within multiethnic societies—specifically how the Singaporean state institutionalizes race, manages diversity, and constructs national identity through a framework of 'meritocracy' and global capitalism.
I hope it might align well with Ethnic Studies’ focus on colonial legacies, race and power, and transnational formations, while also encouraging critical engagement with how race and governance intersect beyond the U.S.
