Deadline: Rolling admissions for students who 1) speak proficient Spanish or Arabic 2) have a 3.0 GPA or above and 3) 3rd year or higher standing. Regular admission deadline September 15. Students are encouraged to apply early for full consideration.

In 2026-2027, we will partner with immigrant justice organizations in the US-Mexico border region to look at the theme of Reimagining Refuge. Students will be placed as interns with partner organizations. They will profile the organizations’ work to build alternatives to the current US immigration system.

Andres Lemons, our USS immigration attorney is now available to do consultations on Parole in Place (PIP). The Biden Administration policy provides eligible spouses and step children of a U.S citizen who came into the country without authorization by an immigration officer a pathway to lawful permanent residency without having to leave the country. More information about the policy and eligibility criteria can be found below.
Please direct students to make an appointment with Andres using the appointment link on the USS website (uss.ucsd.edu) and select “Consultation about New Executive Action for Spouses and Stepchildren of U.S. Citizens.”
A key goal of the USS and of our Immigration Legal Services is to help eligible undocumented students acquire a pathway to residency or citizenship. There are several current federal policies in place that can potentially benefit students and possibly put them on this pathway.

The Tribal Membership Initiative Fellowship Nomination
If students are admitted for TMI eligible graduate programs and indicate they are Native American, Native Hawaiian, and/or Native Alaskan then I will check to see if they have documents recognizing their affiliation to a federally recognized tribe in Slate. If students meet our eligibility requirements, I will contact the corresponding graduate coordinator and ask them to nominate the student in Slate. If a potential TMI recipient did not submit documents in their program application, I will contact the student and ask them to email the document to their graduate coordinator. If you receive the document please upload it into Slate, nominate your student for the TMI, and please email me to check their eligibility. I will then check their eligibility and will award the TMI Letter. If you have a student you would like me to check for TMI eligibility you may email me directly.
