It could be that you have used the Mapping your GenAI & AI Policy Tool and determined that student use of GenAI on some assessments or in some ways will facilitate their achievement of the learning outcomes, or at least not undermine them. But, you also determined that GenAI use on other assessments or other tasks might be detrimental to student learning.
In that case, you need a Conditional Use Policy that informs students the conditions under which they can use GenAI in the completion of their academic work.
Craft a written policy that informs students they may conditionally use GenAI in your class. You can use/adapt this template.
State that you have the right to follow-up with an oral conversation to assess their learning
Discuss when GenAI use would cross a line from acceptable to cheating
E.g., using it to generate topic ideas for a paper is fine, but using it to generate content is not fine
List out if there are specific tools allowed and for what purposes (e.g., ResearchRabbit for finding scholarly research)
In each assessment prompt, remind students of the policy and that they should keep records of their GenAI use (and cite it appropriately) and also document their process of completing the assessment.
For example, encourage students to use Google docs to keep track of their version histories (for written assignments).
You always want students to document their use of GenAI tools, not only to protect academic integrity and help you assess whether learning occurred, but to raise their AI Literacy as well as their awareness of what they are doing and why.
See the Modeling and Encouraging Transparency page for more information.
If you are not allowing GenAI use on some assessments or even for some tasks, those assessments/tasks should be secured, because the ultimate responsibility of an instructor is to certify that a student has achieved the course learning outcomes to an acceptable level.
A secure assessment doesn't mean simply holding it in-person. Read further on how to secure assessments.
Unless you are securing those assessments on which GenAI is not allowed, there will be violations of your Policy. So, make sure you know how to identify misuse and address the suspected violations.
