5. STUDENT WELL-BEING

UCSD’s growth, based on the expansion of enrollment, capital projects, and debt, has not translated into enhanced student well-being.

The growth in student population has not been accompanied by a proportional growth in support staff.



Despite recent improvements, the growth of Professional Support Staff (PSS) has lagged behind student enrollments.

While the increase in graduate student housing is commendable, there seems to have been inadequate attention to its growing unaffordability.


The cost of the average UCSD graduate housing bed has grown by 52% in only 4 years (2016-2020), while UCSD graduate student pay has increased by 13% in the same period.

Despite improvements, UCSD’s student population still faces difficulties addressing basic needs.



41% of UCSD students experience food insecurity, and 4% experience homelessness.

The provision of student mental health services continues to be underfunded.

Counseling and Psychological Services utilization has increased 91% since 2008-09, with an 84% increase in total units of service.

Standards set by the International Accreditation for Counseling Services (IACS) suggest a ratio of 1:1000 for mental health counselors.

CAPS has been working at a deficit ratio beyond even the 1:1200 warning level.
