EHR
To manage the complicated structure consisting of different doctors’ notes, patients’ health, and medical history, Epic developed EHR/Electronic Medical Record (EMR) software with a visual interface. However, there have still been concerns due to the difficulty of learning to use the Epic interface and the inaccuracy of the data.
Dashboards
Clinical dashboards are able to summarize and display a high volume of patient health indicators in a concise and user-friendly visual format. With the sheer amount of data available these days, clinicians will need to efficiently and effectively parse through all the raw data when trying to make data-supported clinical decisions.
Wearables
Wearable devices, such as smartwatches and other wristband-like devices, are commonly used and commercially available everywhere. Wearable devices can continuously monitor and collect physiological signs and physical activities data from sensors and provide personalized healthcare services, such as tracking sleep, counting steps, or measuring stress, etc. With the large-scale commercial usage of wearables, most have built-in apps and are relatively simple to extract data from.
Ethical Risks
Handling sensitive medical information requires developers to add multiple layers of security. An accidental HIPAA violation when trying to access our patients’ data and leaking sensitive patient information could cause harm to patients in some manner.
