Expected 12 hours of unpaid of work: March 4th - April 30th
What is expected during those 12 hours:
3 hours reading about composting
3 hours meeting with experts on campus to discuss composting and visiting different systems
6 hours designing your system (including costing, and list of materials) and submitting your design by May 1st
We will give you the tools to learn how composting works in order for you to design a sufficient system. You will submit your proposed design and if chosen, move on to round 2.
Expected 10-20 hours of paid work: May 1st to June 20th
If your design is chosen:
You will be hired (16/hour) and paid to build your system.
Prototype must be built by June 20th. We will supply materials and tools.
You have the chance to win an Apple MacBook Air and the possibility to participate in a summer research project in 2025 + video advertisement of work.

If you have any outstanding questions, we will be holding a Q&A session on February 24th at 6pm and March 3rd at 9am to answer any questions you might have. Information, including the zoom link, will be sent to the email address you used on the registration form.
Guidelines
You are able to use a preexisting design.
Must provide a document explaining how to build the unit and justification of the cost per unit.
Must provide list of needed materials.
Must provide a sketch of the design and explain how it works.
Aim for roughly 80 gallons (ideal for a family composting unit).
Must be rat proof. For example, using hard-cloth around the system.
Organizers will create video together with winner about how to build the winning design.
