GEAR UP provides free services for Soledad High's Class of 2023 families. Information about our core services can be found below.
What: Each family participates in Individual Academic Planning (IAP) sessions to discuss their student's academic journey. Topics include A-G requirements, high school graduation requirements, grades, extracurriculars, college admissions, financial aid options, and others.
Why: Family IAPs serve as an opportunity for parents and guardians to ask questions, address issues, and discover ways to support their student. We believe our students are more likely to achieve goals when families are informed and engaged.
When: Family IAPs occur every year, just like student IAPs. It's important to evaluate grades, A-G completion, graduation requirements, and college and career readiness, on a consistent basis in order to best respond to issues and offer support.
How: We prefer to conduct IAPs in person, but we know how busy life can get as a parent or guardian. Now, we can conduct IAPs over the phone, and via virtual tools like Zoom.
To schedule a family IAP, please contact our Family Involvement Coordinator at 831.247.5832 or email atovar1@ucsc.edu.
What: Parent Academies are a series of tailored workshops taking into account the student's age and grade level. They focus on study skills, brain and social development, A-G vs. high school grad requirements, the college application process, financial aid opportunities, career options, and more. Families who complete the series are invited to attend a graduation ceremony at the conclusion. Dinner, refreshments, and child care are provided.
Why: The more our families understand, the better prepared our students are for the future. Our workshops seek to empower parents and families so that our youth feel supported at home while making forward progress in the classroom.
When: We offer fall and spring academies. They are typically held in the evening at Soledad High School.
What: University and college visits aren't just for students. Our families are also invited participate in all-expense-paid trips that include campus tours, presentations, informational and question and answer sessions with college students and staff. Lunch and snacks are provided for all attendees.
Why: We believe our families benefit tremendously when they experience college life for a day. We have seen firsthand how exposure to higher education options inspires and enhances the lives of our students, families, and communities.
When: Family visits typically occur a couple of times a year, and during the summer. They're offered on Saturdays to accommodate working schedules. We look forward to scheduling our next family college visit!
Stay tuned for upcoming events!
