Even though this is our first year as a club, we have plenty of ambitious plans for this year's production. Our club is all about learning to make a dramatic narrative product with modern digital technology, lots of people, and ambitious ideas.
This year's project will be a 20 - 30 minute pilot for a episodic series, one that might fit on a TV network or streaming service. We will actually be pitching the series to content services using the pilot, and if one of them picks the show up, there may even be some career opportunities for our club members!
If not, this year's project will still be a huge boost to anyone's resume, especially those who want to go into media production after school.
THE RIPPLE is the most ambitious cinematic project ever attempted here at UCSC. Besides its projected half-hour runtime and extensive VFX reliance, it's a complex character-driven drama, intended to compete with professionally produced shows and movies. Featuring a large ensemble cast, fully realized greenscreen environments, original music and soundtrack, everyone who works on this project will have a solid title to add to their portfolio of work.
The story that we've constructed is complex but moving, the result of hours of work by our talented writer's team. By the end of winter break, we will have the final draft of the script, and this will be publicly available for people to read as they sign onto the project.
The story itself features spacecraft, alien ecosystems, cities, cultures, creatures, and everything in between. In order to pull this off, we will need a diverse array of talented artists to pull it off. That's where you come in.
In an effort to be accessible, we've decided to make our script publicly available, which you can read right here!
We are now sourcing our budget through Kickstarter, so if you would like to
enable our noble work, you can support us there! All funding will go towards
pilot materials, such as fabrics and paints, digital storage, containers, and
essential rations for long shooting days. There will also be an enticing array of
exclusive digital rewards for our backers, so check it out!
First off, we want to depart from the quarterly projects that FPC and the production classes provide, and extend a single project over the course of the entire year. This is closer to the production schedule of a real dramatic film, and will give us more time to practice and attempt bolder things.
Fall quarter will be devoted to recruitment and pre-production. We have a lot of roles to fill, and we need to make sure they have all the right tools for production. While the writing team is hard at work crafting the story, we will be recruiting new members and holding advanced production workshops (yes, you read right, free training) so that club members aren't just sitting around all quarter waiting for their roles to become needed. This also gives us time to select a Director, arguably the most crucial role in the whole production, so there will be a lengthy selection process.
Late Fall quarter will see the planning phase for production, where shotlists are made and costumes are crafted. This will continue right up until the beginning of next quarter, which is when we will dive straight into shooting.
Winter Quarter will be made up of mostly shooting, but that doesn't mean that the digital departments will sit idle during that time. As soon as we have our first day of footage the editors, VFX artists, and sound department will start working on the massive task of taking the film from raw footage to final cut.
This process will stretch far into Spring Quarter, which will be mostly post-production work with a fair chance of reshoots, once a rough cut has been constructed and we can see what the story needs. As the school year draws to a close, we will take some time to plan at least one major celebration where we can view the final result. This is also when we will begin marketing the piece to the powers that be in the industry.
The roles for the production unit will be selected from club members based on members' demonstrated ability and initiative, but we will continue to offer workshops, training, and other social events for ALL club members throughout the year.
