About
Statement of purpose
EquiL (Equity in Linguistics) is a graduate student-led service group dedicated to fostering equity in the field of Linguistics, broadly, across three main areas:
Our grad-internal department community
Our UCSC Linguistics Department community (grads, faculty, and undergrads)
The larger community, broadly construed
Our group has many aspirational ideas about future projects and events we would like to host in relation to these areas. In recent quarters, we've established regular commitment to coordinating and hosting the following events throughout the academic year for our linguistics department community:
Grad wellness events (Fall and Spring Quarters), to provide students a place to support each other and discuss shared experiences. Topics include mental health, burnout, imposter syndrome, advising and mentoring support, sense of belonging in Linguistics, etc.
Summer incoming first-year orientation (Fall Quarter Week 0), to set expectations about work-load, first-year courses, collaborating and maintaining a good/mutually-beneficial relationship with your cohort, grad students responsibilities, how to find an advisor during your first year, other “hidden curriculum” issues, and generally what life in Santa Cruz is like.
Department-internal pedagogy workshops (1~2 per year depending on interest), covering topics such as course design, how to better support students with skills we perceive them to be struggling with most, practicing equity-minded/anti-racist teaching, etc.
