IR spectra of the starting material and product will be interpreted.
*same process for preparing both solid samples*
Add a small amount of the solid sample (salicylic acid or isolated product) with 1-2 drops of nujol into the mortar
Grind the sample for 1 minute
Use a rubber policeman to transfer the sample to one of the IR plates
Add the second IR plate such that the sample is sandwiched between the plates – swirl together to distribute the sample
Gently place the IR plates into the sample holder and then measure the spectrum!
Before analyzing IR spectra:
Make a list of functional groups (FG)
For double bonds, identify whether it's conjugated or saturated
Go to the IR table of values (below)
Find each FG, list corresponding bonds and expected wavenumber ranges
Enter this information into table format
Discuss: In-Lab #5
Interpret the IR spectra of starting material and product in table format.
Which peaks in each IR spectra be used to tell whether the reaction is complete?
