Extraction with Weak Base

• Add 10 mL of K2HPO4 (aq) to the separatory funnel

• Cap then invert the funnel twice while holding onto the cap

SAFETY: Vent into the fume hood by holding the funnel upside-down and open the stop cock with the tip pointing away from your face

• Continue to mix and vent frequently for at least 3 minutes

• Drain the mildly basic aqueous layer containing deprotonated aspirin into a labeled scintillation vial (K2HPO4 – ASP AQ)
