1. Spot plate

check spots beforehand!

2. Develop plate

place lid upside-down to avoid disturbing

3. Mark solvent front

quick! before the solvent evaporates

Results: TLC plates – standards (left) vs. products isolated from acid-base extraction (right)

standards (left) vs. isolated products (right) under the UV lamp

Calculate the retention factors (Rf) of each standard and the isolated components

Rf = distance spot traveled (cm) / distance solvent traveled (cm)
