Measure the corrected retention times of these standards in order to positively identify sample peaks on the GC chromatogram of the distillate.
Use the ruler to measure the distance (cm) from the air peak to sample peak
Convert the distance into corrected retention time (tR'), sec using the chart recorder speed: 2.5 cm / min
Measure tR' of both sample peaks
Discuss: Which alkene do you expect to elute from the column first?
* Did you run the reaction with 1-methylcyclohexanol, and are expecting to see a chromatogram of methylenecyclohexane standard? Out of luck! Just use the same corrected tR' for 3-methylcyclohexene. Discuss: WHY?
measure tR' for the alcohol that you started with – (a) or (b)
Next, select your distillate based on your starting material!
