Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Bay Net

Activities through the Exploration Center of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), which is funded by National Oceanic and Atmospherics Administration (NOAA)

As Bay Net volunteers, we set up telescopes at Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz to find sea otters resting in the kelp and invite passers-by to take a look. Once hooked, we tell them about the recovery of the Monterey Bay, which is now a National Marine Sanctuary, and direct them to the Exploration Center where they can learn more. Occasionally we see humpback and gray whales. Shoals of anchovies sometimes attract feeding frenzies of brown pelicans, cormorants and gulls.
