Museum ofArt &History

The Museum of Art & History (MAH) in Santa Cruz hosts GLOW; a festival of light and fire. Students and staff from UCSC stage an exhibit to introduce the science behind chemi- and bio-luminescence to the public. Samples include bacteria expressing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) genes from a sea jelly which make them glow under uv light. The same principle is used to track the location of specific proteins in eukaryotic cells and follow events such as metastasis of cancer cells.
