My Experience as a UC Teaching Professor: Thriving in a Job that No One Really Understands
Abstract:
The Teaching Professor position at the University of California is a special but not always well-defined role. In this talk I will share my journey to becoming a teaching professor at UC San Diego, and the tips I've learned for overcoming barriers and finding success along the way. (Spoiler alert: Don't try too hard to figure out what is expected of you in this role. Instead, do what you're passionate about, and then convince people that what you've done is what they expected of you.) I will discuss some of the educational programs I've built at UC San Diego including the CSE Early Research Scholars Program, which is now the basis of a new national program run by the Computing Research Association. Finally, I will discuss several initiatives that I have been involved with that have helped elevate the teaching professor position at UC San Diego. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion!
