Dr. Jia Chen

Jia Chen is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). She was previously an Assistant Professor in the Department of ECE at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Her research interests are machine learning, signal processing, and multiview learning. 

Dr. Analisa Flores

Analisa Flores is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from UCR. Her research interests are in statistics education for undergraduate students. She is particularly focused on course design, inclusive and accessible pedagogy, supporting diversity, and advancing opportunities for underrepresented groups.

Dr. Joyce Fu

Joyce Fu is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Statistics, earned her Ph.D. in statistics at University of California, Riverside. She previously worked as a data scientist in MarketShare, LA and taught Data Science in NYU Shanghai. Her research interests are in the areas of data mining, change-point detection for discrete data with various applications in network surveillance, digital marketing, and consumer behavior analysis with big data.

Dr. Mariam Salloum

Mariam Salloum is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). She earned her PhD from UCR in 2012. Prior to joining UCR she worked in industry as a Data Scientist. Her research interests include databases, data integration, applied ML and CS Education.





Graduate Student Ambassadors

Emily Ouyang

Emily Ouyang is a Ph.D student in Statistics at the University of California, Riverside, where she also received her Bachelors of Science in Mathematics for Teachers of Secondary School and Pure Statistics. Her main research interest is education research, among other sociological issues.

Rebecca Kurtz-Garcia

Rebecca Kurtz-Garcia is a PhD candidate in the Statistics department.  She received her Masters of Science in Statistics degree in 2018 at Ball State University, and her Bachelors of Science in Statistics in 2016 from the University of California Davis. She has worked on a variety of projects related to time series, biostatistics, sports analysis, and fiscal policy.  Her current research is working in econometrics, spectral analysis, and time series analysis.

Jericho Lawson

Jericho Lawson is a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Applied Statistics at the University of California, Riverside. His research interests include machine learning, big data, and sports analytics. He graduated from University of Arizona in 2020 with a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Statistics & Data Science, and is currently the president of the Statistics Mini-GSA at UCR.





Undergraduate Student Ambassadors

Soumya Agarwal

Soumya Agarwal is a 2nd year Undergraduate student majoring in Statistics at the University of California, Riverside. She is passionate about furthering her data knowledge and technical skills through her involvement in the Highlander Statistics Society, Design at UCR, and the Association of Information Systems. Her educational and industry interests include all things data related such as big data, data analytics and data science, Machine Learning/A.I, UI/UX Design, and Business. In her freetime, she enjoys reading articles, baking, and photography. 

Varsha Kuppa

Varsha Kuppa is a 1st year undergraduate student majoring in Statistics at the University of California, Riverside. She has been involved in conservational research projects and has experience in data wrangling and data management. Her industry and academic interests include machine learning, A.I., and bioinformatics. Outside the industry, she enjoys going on bike rides throughout the city and curling up with a good book.

Minnoli Nori

Minnoli Nori is a 1st-year Undergraduate student majoring in Data Science at the University of California, Riverside. She is interested in the applications of data science in cybersecurity and digital forensics. Her experience in Data Science and Statistics is furthered by her involvement in the Highlander Statistics Society, the Association of Computer Machinery, and in planning campus hackathons. In her downtime, she loves browsing through bookstores, playing video games, and writing for publications.
