In piano class, students will:
Demonstrate an understanding of musical notation. Units to be covered include treble and bass clef note identification, grand staff, drawing notes, accidentals, relating staff to keyboard, basic rhythms, and writing counts.
Develop correct piano technique, including posture, hand position, and fingering
Apply knowledge of notation in writing basic musical symbols and terms
Perform individually and in a group setting
Individual student progress will be monitored on check-off sheets kept by the instructor. Students are expected to work to their full potential and will play for the teacher at least twice a week.
30% quizzes, daily practice and progression (includes having all materials every day)
50% test, recital participation, performances, and playing tests
20% classwork, homework
All performance-based assignments are graded against a rubric. If there is a question on grades awarded, please view the rubric for that given assignment. If you have more questions, do not hesitate to reach out for clarification.
Tests & Projects: All tests will be announced a week in advance and study guide will be available for all students.
Recitals: All students are required to perform in a recital every 6 weeks. All Recitals will be announced in advance and is non-negotiable and will be performed during class time. If a conflict arises, talk to Mr. Calpo at the beginning of the year, or three (3) weeks in advance. A parent note may be necessary in addition to a makeup recital once that student has returned. In the event of a quarantine event, students my submit a video of their performance if they have a keyboard or piano at home. If they do not, they can make up their recital at school.
Quizzes: Any quiz can be unannounced on piano information, musical terms, and analyzing of piano repertoire. Students are responsible to take quizzes during absences of any kind. Quizzes cannot be taken again for a better grade.
Classwork: All work can be done during class time or may be assigned as homework. All makeup work has a set time frame to be completed. Any late work is minus 10 points, daily, after the due date.
Homework: Homework is to be completed in the time given. If a student misses the day the work was assigned, they have the same amount of time to make up the work before they start losing points.
Piano is primarily a participation-based class, attendance plays a critical role in the success level of each student. Poor attendance is often the primary reason for a student’s poor progress and grades in piano class.
Method books are provided by the school and free for students to use. Damaging the method book or marking in pen may result in a school fine.
