Union County Public Schools' educational philosophy focuses on helping every student learn and develop his or her individual potential - "Preparing All Students to Succeed". Developing the individual potential of Union County Public School's gifted students is an especially challenging task and one that requires understanding of gifted students' unusual development and learning profiles.
For students who come to school with advanced knowledge and unusual learning ability, individual potential can be compromised in the absence of curriculum that is not differentiated and properly matched to students' learning characteristics. Those characteristics include the capacity to handle content at an advanced level and pace, the ability to explore areas in significant depth, the tendency to ask and grapple with difficult questions.
The curriculum that has been selected is specifically designed to challenge academically and intellectually gifted advanced learners and provide experiences that require:
- critical thinking
- problem solving
- independent study skills
- communication
- persistence in the face of challenges
- capacity to provoke interpretive behavior and contemplative thought
