Universidad Complutense de Madrid, within the framework of the General Assembly of October 2025, is thrilled about the opportunity to promote and deepen collaborative ties between Europe and Latin America, strengthening research, teaching, and knowledge exchange.
To enhance existing connections and promote new initiatives that, through multicultural and multilingual dialogue, contribute to strengthening bi-regional cooperation in higher education, UCM sponsors a dialogue based on joint reflection on the role of universities in the current global context, characterized by challenges that require scientific cooperation and the consolidation of strong university networks and strategic international alliances.
The Euro-Latin American Education Area offers a unique opportunity to advance the role of universities in complex global contexts, exploring concrete mechanisms for collaboration while positioning our institutions at the heart of shifting world order. We firmly believe that the so-called “university diplomacy” has a critical role to play in this endeavour.
Strategic alliances, academic mobility, research transfer and educational innovation are key pillars in building a Common Area of Higher Education between Europe and Latin America to perfect a more solid, inclusive and sustainable academic cooperation. The Universidad Complutense embraces this vision, actively promotes it, and looks forward to shaping its future.
I am confident that all participants, wherever students, professors or administration and regardless of our daily roles or responsibilities, will contribute their expertise and dedication to continue building the University of the Future.
We sincerely thank you all for your attendance to this General Assembly and are honoured to host you. It is our hope that your time in Madrid will be successful and fully satisfactory, and we remain at your full disposal to ensure its success.
Rosario Cristóbal Roncero
Vice-Rector for International Relations, Cooperation and Volunteering
As could not be otherwise, Universidad Complutense has extended an invitation to the rectors of some of the most representative and prestigious universities in Latin America to take part in our General Assembly. So far, the universities listed below have confirmed their attendance, which we are pleased to report.
We have ensured that the rectors from Una Europa universities and the invited rectors from across Latin America will have the time and space to engage in meaningful dialogue, exchange ideas, and lay the foundations for what we hope will become a fruitful collaboration, leading to concrete outcomes in the near future. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the international organisation that supports the 22 countries of the Ibero-American community. SEGIB’s headquarters are based in Madrid.
On 23 October, from 14:00 to 16:30, SEGIB’s Salón de Embajadores will host a closed-door meeting between rectors from both sides of the Atlantic. The aim is to foster joint reflection on the role of universities in today’s complex global landscape. The session will explore concrete mechanisms for collaboration, such as joint projects, shared academic programmes, or upcoming international funding calls.
Afterwards, the rectors will head to Casa de América, a Spanish public institution dedicated to promoting cultural, social, economical and political relations and cooperation between Spain and Latin America. Located just a few steps away, in the Palacio de Linares, Casa de América will host all Assembly participants for the Una Europa Talk in its main auditorium. This roundtable session will feature four rectors—two from Europe and two from Latin America—as speakers.
