- Rebel Echoes: Alien Stage’s Homonormative Rebellion Resonating with Queer Minorities' Revolutions for Recognition and Representation -
My Primary Source Focus - Alien Stage:
✦Although both Korean animation directors, VIVINOS and QMENG, are known by fans for their other previous works that consist of queer music animations, they have gained significant popularity after the premier of the Alien Stage series.
✦ In a post-apocalyptic world, where Earth has been colonized by alien invasion, this sci-fi series takes place where humans have been downgraded as a lesser species, seen as merely "pets" and alien entertainment.
✦ The narrative focuses on Season 50 of "Alien Stage", a survival show where humans are entered as contestants in a deadly singing competition against other human peers and participants for merely alien entertainment and to win the possibility of regaining free will and freedom. The show consists of 7 rounds. In each round, two contestants are expected to sing against each other, and in the end, the alien audience will then pick/vote for their favorite contestant. The fewer votes a human contestant gets will lead to their elimination (in other words, death). This continues to go on until a mysterious group of people disrupts the show in an attempt to save the human contestants from their unfortunate fates.

"it's not that there hasn't been a music video that can tell a certain story, but I don't think there's ever been an intuitive and stimulating SF [Science Fiction] stuff like this. And I think there were many attempts like this in J-pop, but I don't think there were any attempts like this in K-pop. So, even with the slightly special music, the timing that people can comfortably listen to when K-pop is at its peak." -QMENG (Commentary, 9:04-9:42)
Scholarly Conversation:
As of now, there are no scholarly conversations relating to my primary source, Alien Stage, since it is still fairly new and ongoing. However, the topics of "queer information poverty" and "queer unhappiness" can be seen in this series, which are also talked about in many other examples of LGBTQ+ animations. The term "queer" throughout this research means both "different"/"strange" and is a term to identify individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Notably, these two terms have the same meaning in terms of "queer deviation", deviating from the "straight" path that is expected to be followed(Ruberg).
Essentially, this "queer" animated collaborated work by both queer female creators (VIVINOS and QMENG are openly in a relationship with one another) was born due to the issue of "information poverty" that exists - meaning that there is a lack of queer entertainment media (animations, series, etc.) existing in the Korean media industry. When applying this term to queer theory, there has been a noticeable scarcity of media that includes queer representations, which then leads to many indie creators creating their forms of media that include representations of LGBTQ+ minorities to alleviate the existing "informational" void. This, however, has many limits when it comes to actual production and publishing. Many of the existing queer media that exist are published only if the gay characters in the queer media are unhappy which results in queer unhappiness - queer characters being unable to achieve their happy endings to avoid favoring homosexuality (Ahmed).
Although there are many challenges and limits to creating queer entertainment media, many queer creators such as VIVINOS create homonormative worlds, making homosexuality the social norm, that have "unhappy queer endings" but unhappy as it is a doomed relationship that does not reinforce the idea to remove queer identities and demoralize them. This eventually leads to the satisfaction of creators and fans of finding queer entertainment media and queer representation, despite the queer characters having an unhappy and doomed ending, which applies to Alien Stage.

Primary source Analysis:
My analysis will consist of all 9 Korean music videos from the series.
I will first analyze the show as a whole to recognize the type of oppression and treatment the main characters experience by aliens (since humans are seen as the minority) as well as analyze the relationships and community that have been built between characters to gain a better understanding of the society that the characters live in and have built to survive the world that they currently live in.
Throughout the series, there is a noticeable theme of obsessive love between the main characters, similar to idolization. One of the main analyses is the interesting god/universe references and analogies that persist in many videos. An example can be seen in the relationship between the characters Mizi and Sua. During the first round of the series, Mizi narrates the introduction of the series and ends the narration with "From the moment humanity left the universe, we all forgot about God. But if belief in god is human, if all I can do as a human is believe...my god, my universe"(ROUND 1, 2:29-2:49). She is seen constantly admiring Sua and seeing her as something more than her childhood friend, concluding to the interpretation that Sua is Mizi's purpose in living through Alien Stage. The god references are later on seen for Mizi and Sua's relationship again when Luka uses Mizi's weakness, imitating this "god" relationship they have in ROUND 6, "my savior, beautiful lady, make me your god, I can give you everything"(1:44-1:52). The God references eventually establish a frame for the way queer relationships in this series are structured. As mentioned before, the God that we know has died with Earth in this series, so we can assume that the show is possibly saying: who needs a homophobic religion when they can find salvation with each other and in queer love?
This sense of queer love then finds its way to connect back to the way this series queer codes rebellion: how the characters in these series challenge the expectations they are supposed to follow to pursue their queer love for another person, each deviating in their own unique ways.
I would also like to explore the effect that the creators' other social media have on the series. How this form of media consumption portrays the series from a fandom's perspective, overlaps with the real world, and how part of the series/story is being told through the actual creator's social media and with fan interactions.
Tentative thesis:
Throughout the series Alien Stage, VIVINOS and QMENG exhibit a homonormative lens to depict deviation and rebellion against alien oppression, mirroring real-world LGBTQIA+ struggles within the heteronormative Korean community who rebel against social norms to advocate for acceptance and representation through indie, queer-coded, media narratives.
Worldbuilding ?
The creators express their ideals and views of the queer community in their works by creating something that is homonormative, this form of media consumption that includes queer representation is their way of worldbuilding. Considering the backgrounds of both queer creators of this series, VIVINOS and QMENG have created a story where the sexualities of the characters lean heavily on the homosexual and queer spectrum. The characters in the series (specifically Mizi, Sua, and Ivan) can be seen continuously pursuing their love for their homoromantic interest - a romantic interest of the same gender - and essentially finding salvation from these relationships. By making the characters experience oppression due to their inferior status as a species towards aliens instead of a character's sexuality, the creators have built a world where homosexuality is socially and culturally normal in the series.
By building small homonormative worlds and communities, the creators and fans, including the queer community, can steer away from the persistent heteronormativity that exists in the real world and escape to the fantasy, sci-fi world of Alien Stage.

This round featuring both Mizi and Sua sing together as they harmonize with each other, fated to compete with one another on the first round of the show, Alien Stage. These two childhood best friends spend their last few moments together, reminiscing their memories as they face the unavoidable death of the losing side.
An introduction to what the world of the series looks like in the perspective of humans.
This round featuring the character Till, begins with him singing his own individual song he has composed directed towards his admiration for another character, Mizi.
This round featuring the character Ivan begins with him singing a rather sad song that is directed towards another character, Till, and his feelings of admiration, obsession, and love towards him.
This round features the character Luka, who is seen to defeat the singer previously from round 4, now competing against the hopeless Mizi who has just lost her most precious person, Sua. While Luka uses her weakness to his advantage, there is a sudden interruption that disrupts their competition near the end.

This video introduces Hyuna, leader of the rebellious group of humans who have managed to escape the alien's system, who works together with other humans in order to save others who are currently trapped in the alien system, such as Mizi.
This round focuses on the competition between two of the top 3 contestants of the show, Till and Ivan. While Till continues to grieve and lose hope due to Mizi's sudden disappearance, Ivan is once again singing the song about his feelings towards Till, reminiscing his memories with Till. He then does the unexpected to save + awaken Till from his hopelessness and sorrow.
