Disclaimer: I am not the owner nor do I have the rights to the original Series that I make edits/art of that I reference in this page. It's just a fun past-time I do when I have time.
Disclaimer 2: For the content that relates to the character "Gabriel," I am not associating myself with the Devil. I just really like him as a character and he strikes me as a very unique representation of an antagonist/evil presence in comparison to other horror media.
This is actually two fanarts in one:
I bought the jacket during The Midnight's tour at the LA Greek Theatre. I don't think my life will ever peak again after that point.
Both make me happy, and I was at a pretty low point of my life. But this fanart also helped me realize how much colors can really set the vibe
I wanted to redesign the logo for the Mandela Catalogue (No offense Alex Kister I love you). Here is what it looks like:
I love the filter but I think it has a lot of potential to be something "merchable" because Kister has used a similar font and style for his merch, which...
Official TMC Shirt
Official TMC Sweatshirt logo
Alex Kister's Youtube logo
Seems a bit lack luster...? In comparison to his posters, which I actually really do like. I know it's supposed to represent the found footage style, but I'd like to attempt a "catalogue" type feel to the logo especially with how the videos are edited recently.
Plus, his youtube profile pic is in the same style.
Here's the link to his merch, by the way. Support your favorite creators!
I thought the occasional use of red was a really cool motif in the videos, considering it almost always appears whenever "outside interference" changes the content of the VHS tapes in which the Mandela Catalogue is captured in.
I tried to make square logos but I didn't really feel it with this one. TMC is one of the series I think suits wider logos
This is the one I've stuck with! I don't know, I don't have much graphic design training, but there's something about asymmetries that I just love.
It will go on my pillowcase. How convenient that we have an entry for that as well!
A lot of people tell me why I do the things I do. I'm not actually sure how to answer that question besides free will.
So I was eyeing this $13 custom double sided pillow cover on Etsy and I was pretty much sold on it. I mean, I could go to conventions or camping with "Gabriel" - both sides of him, in fact.
I really like his "Overthrone" appearances, though Vol.4's appearance would also be an honorable mention..
The development/road to the final images is (in my opinion) a big jump from what it was previously. Not to say that what I did is the most professional touch up, but it was a much different "photoshop" experience than one may expect...
Because this is what the original photo(s) look like, courtesy of the original Overthrone video -
As you can see, these images actually really suck. They're grainy (makes sense given the type of VHS video the Mandela Catalogue bases itself on).
There's an HD version that was put in the official wiki.
It has a strange, slight lazy eye to him, and it was often ridiculed in the fanbase (sometimes some fanart). I still thought he was beautiful in a neither masculine or feminine way, and whether he had a lazy eye or not, it would not change my feelings whatsoever.
In any case, the "HD" photo did piss me off in that, with closer inspection, whoever submitted it must've used some crappy upscaler. Curves were strange and jagged, air looked matted, and it must've made those dark pixels in his eyes as something part of his cornea. Granted, upscalers don't have much to work with if the original photo is 144p quality... so it was up to me to remold him into what he deserves to look like.
One thing I didn't like much was that he looked happier in the HD version, something that I felt was off from the original portrayal in the video. There's some tiny added details in the HD version that I realized could've been added on or photoshopped into.. highlights to make him more lively or human-like than he is.
You also may have noticed it already, but the HD version is also significantly lighter and more purple/blue than the original.
With touch-ups, I mainly wanted to maintain the integrity of his facial features, deepening the shadows that his nose, his chin/neck, and his lips were especially in need.
Finalized images - I'm quite proud of how he turned out!
So Volume 5 released/premiered on June 24 and look at the beauty and grace that has shown itself at approximately 23:34 in the video -
I LOVE HIMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Perhaps the 480p quality of the video and the really blurry shadows of this low poly render version of "Gabriel" wasn't enough to give me an idea of what he may actually look like, but surely the imagination exists, and artists also exist. Unfortunately, I am part of both of those groups. My goal was just to make it as though you were seeing him in person, not 480p and -5 vision style but in HD 20/20 style. The video representation is much scarier to encounter in real life, but you know.. I'm used to having blurry vision and I always dismiss shadows and faces in my periferal, no matter how frightening the implications might be.
It was a rather simple but interesting process to try and make contoured shadows make sense in this context. There's barely any value shift and the brightest color is just... dark, dark grey. However, I didn't want to add too much white highlights either as to make it less faithful to the original. I want him in his full glory without extraneous assumptions about his hair, face, features, etc.
The thing is, though - and I fully knew - is that the original STILL is a low poly render (or at least a less detailed model of him). I had to play the video many times and I do feel as though I captured his face in a bit of a more feminine way than intended.
Because truth be told... i couldn't make heads or tails out of the snippet. His mouth could've been lower, at the very least, but he "blinks" in that video with his... cheek. Or is that entire black area of his eye the actual eye? That would make sense too.
Posted it on r/MandelaCatalogue to share enthusiasm for the release
progress photo shows how taking the render at face value didn't really go as well as I hoped...
I saw the logo of an app I had and it just clicked one day. So I made this and sent it to the subreddit.
There is nothing to be said. It just needed to exist
r/MandelaCatalogue - THIS LOGO LOOKS LIKE N AS A BABY
This is an AU (alternative universe) where everything is actually okay. Alternates show up to your home but only for the sake of pajama parties.
I initially wanted to bring this idea to life because I wanted more clothing-type merch made under this fandom. I was also having a shortage of pajamas...
Unfortunately I never brought up the idea to the creator himself because I realized it could be taken as fanservice... so it was just limited to a reddit post.
Given that it was going down the route of fanservice, it may as well have included this quick sketch with the post as well.
Bonus:
Walten Files in onesies of their respective(?) animatronics
(I haven't had the guts to watch TWF Volume 4 and beyond, so the pairings may be inaccurate. I think Walten Files is the only horror series I've encountered that genuinely disturbs me. Check out Martin Walls on Youtube!)
Relatively straight forward edit for a gift that I gave to my sister, she doesn't like Gabriel but I thought maybe in this context he'd be a bit less intimidating(?)
I took a standalone picture of the present and just went ham on Medibang, adding necessary shadows
Finished image
PNG Hand was free from google, just color-corrected it
Printer kinda sucked on this one but it was fitting for how he would distort VHS tapes. Maybe he corrupted my printer too 🤯
