The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the subject of my research paper.
As I am finalizing my research paper, the best advice I want to give to future students about the research project is to choose a topic in which you have a personal interest in some capacity. I definitely would have had a much more difficult time getting through the literature and analysis of my primary source if I had not been personally invested in pursuing my research topic.
Professor Fan refreshed my interest in structure-based methods of research, having focused on the structure of How To Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe and how it analogizes to actual structures. Professor Ruberg introduced the areas of game studies and game studies, both of which I am excited to pursue in the future. These fields interest me on a more personal level as their subject matters are closer to me. Finally, Professor Betancourt brought spatial theming to my attention, with symbols and aspects determining some narrative that a space itself presents before the incursion of events. I have already begun to utilize spatial factors in my own research.
My perception of worldbuilding at play around me developed rapidly in the fall, and I spent the next two quarters expanding that view through specific elements. As I realize more the effort required to build a world, I have much more appreciation of the arts and, using techniques from this course, I am able to more extensively analyze them to determine meaning from them. I think my website theme of a rose hip developing into a fruit fits well, and the fruit has now ripened.
Overally, the course has helped shape some areas of research that I would be interested in pursuing in the future and consciously in my daily life: film studies, game studies, queer studies, and theming. I didn't pursue gender studies much in this course until the spring, and I wish that I had because I think I could have set up a parallel "curriculum" that would enhance my understanding of both Humanities Core topics and gender studies broadly. I will definitely continue researching in gender studies, now with concepts from Humanities Core ready to add more meaning.
I am excited to continue researching and applying the humanities in my personal life.
