reflection on Professor Robertson's lectures

Why use the past to create modern art? Why does Titus Kaphar choose to take historical pieces of art and turn them into a contemporary revolution of rewriting history?
Titus Kaphar is known for his works in revisioning history...that is giving history a different outlook...another perspective. His presence on social media is quite quiet, seemingly as though he intentionally chooses to let his work be found on people's own accords. Why does he do that? To me, his choice of letting his work be encaptured in only his digital website: Kaphar Studio and in respective galleries all have a meaning.
In all of Kaphar's exhibitions, they're always on the East Coast (aside from the one in London). Granted it could be because he prefers the East Coast over the West Coast, or could it be a strategic choice of the artist’s doing? As I mentioned above, one of Kaphar’s main focuses is amending history: the history of African Americans and their enslaved past. In a majority of his work, he takes images created and made for white people and refurbishes them into images created and made for every person to see and learn from the past. So why possibly choose to have these exhibitions on just one side of America? Could it be because LACMA does not accept Kaphar’s work? Or could it be that’s where the origin of his paintings come from? The places he chose to have his exhibitions in were all apart of the first 13 colonies: the “start of American society”. These places were where Americans began to enslave African Americans and even the exhibition in London pays homage to the British people during the reign of Great Britain who initiated enslaving Africans.
In order to make a difference, you must start at the beginning. Kaphar’s choice in placing his physical art where it all begin just shows how Kaphar is strategic about every action of presenting his art. While Washington D.C might of not been of apart of first 13 colonies of America, it is the capital of current America. In his exhbition located Washington D.C, it is titled: Our Past in a New Light. In my understnading, I believe he choose this place because it's the national capital of America. What's the best place to revision the hisotry America if not in the national place of American government and society.
“He cuts, crumples, shrouds, shreds, stitches, tars, twists, binds, erases, breaks, tears..."
In Professor Cook's lectures, she mentioned how Kaphar's works is a process of "layering on layers of people who've been silenced". On his website, he has his works sectioned into categories whether that be paintings made with tar or ones that have been whitewashed for example. Why does he do this? He does this because it acts as a way for the countless ways history can be reinvisioned. You can change history and the way you can see history by looking at it from different perspectives, or in Kaphar's case, different styles of art.
