TO GET TECHNICAL FOR A MOMENT HERE
AND TO BACK UP MY REASONING FOR PLACING YOU IN THIS
DYSTOPIAN WORLD
Currently, you are embarking on a self-realization journey that was curated to help you understand how technology and the dependency on high likes and ratings has negatively influenced the individual. I have already (tried to) strip you of your individuality and opinions. Our current society has transformed into one that undermines fundamental aspects of being human as we have lost interpersonal relationships with each other, authentic facial expressions, and more. I believe that this is a result of social media and technology, and in order to showcase this, I have created a short stimulation of Netflix's "Nosedive" in this presentation. "Nosedive" presents a great demonstration of how society might be if technology and individuals become greatly intersected with each other as a result of hyperrealism bleeding into our lives. In retrospect, utilizing production aspects of "Nosedive" such as its setting through film analysis as well as partaking in cultural analysis of the episode will allow for a scholarly conversation about technology vs individuals.
Thus far, a scholarly conversation exists around “Nosedive” as scholars debate the influence that social media/technology has had on individuals in our current society. Their reasons include that social media has curated artificial behavior as Preeti Bhattm and Mishra Lata describe in their article “Social Media as a Cause of Emotional Distress and Insecurity in ‘Nosedive’ from Black Mirror” that in order to subdue the pressure of being accepted on social media, one attempts to copy their online persona in their real lives. In hindsight and similarly, Santiag Giraldo-Luque and et al. discuss in their chapter titled “Nosedive and the ‘Like’ Dystopia: A Reflection on Black Mirror” that "Nosedive" acts as a warning message to the danger of social media as the use of social media and technology has radically altered relationships and behavior among each other due to technology and social media. There are other conversations that will be later discussed in my paper. I will engage in all of these scholarly conversations and bring about my own argument of how multiple sides of the conversation about “Nosedive” has led hyperrealism to bleed and blend into our society as the self-choices of individuals to use these platforms has led to artificial behavior. I will also discuss the scholarly conversation about how the message of the episode is a double-edged sword as it implies that watching the show is inevitably what the show argues against.
For intended purposes, my hypothesis is:
Through Nosedive’s recurring change of forced facial expressions of its main character and paired with its pastel then dark setting, the episode critiques the detrimental impacts that the rise of technology and social media has on the individual as well the upsurge of hyperrealism in American society and thought. The uncomfortable dialogue symbolizes the distraught effects that technology has invoked on individuals as they lack key interpersonal skills.

THE CONTRIBUTION
After all this toggling and scrolling back and forth, why does this matter to the scholarly worldbuilding of Humanities Core? It matters because "Nosedive" utilizes worldbuilding to highlight how our own world is worlddestroying, day by day. As we watch on-screen in the episode, we find that as each minute passes, "Nosedive" is not a "what-if" scenario but rather a "what-is" our society is becoming. The episode thrives and feeds on our own world, and takes the worst parts of it to illuminate how indifferent we are becoming to both each other and ourselves.
For that very reason, my project communicates the many aspects of the episode, whether it be in the choice of dialogue (or lack thereof) for example, in order to support an argument about how technology and social media has built a world that has become both common and unrecognizable to the individual. The worldbuilding that occurs in "Nosedive" acts as a warning message to the worlddestroying that is currently occurring in our own world, and pushes us to build a new world where we can become free, individualist people again. It makes us ponder as creators of our own world, if we are inevitably our own destroyers as well.
