The club was founded by Professor Seu Sim and Dr. Paul Hurst (Patterson lab alumni) in 2022. The name back then was GPS (Guan-Patterson-Sim) club to reflect the three polymer chemistry groups in the Department of Chemistry at UCI, and we gratefully acknowledge the support from the Chemistry department. Any graduate students and postdocs in polymer-related disciplines are welcome to participate in our activities regardless of affiliation. Please get in touch with one of our board members if you are interested in getting involved.
Current Leadership
Aleksander Bartnik (Sim Group), Chair
My name is Alex, I'm a chemistry PhD candidate in Professor Sim's lab where my research focuses on the integration of synthetic supramolecular polymers with biological systems. I grew up in the Philadelphia area and earned my bachelor's degree in molecular biology and biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. Outside the lab you can find me playing and watching tennis, running, and cooking.
Leslie Liu (Guan Group)
My name is Leslie and I'm a fourth year in the Guan group. My research investigates the use of polymeric materials as compatibilizers for immiscible polymer blends in order to address critical challenges in recycling mixed plastic waste streams. I grew up in New Jersey and completed my undergrad at NYU, where I developed my passion for polymer chemistry. In my spare time, I enjoy crocheting, pilates, and planting.
Nehal Idris (Patterson Group)
My name is Nehal Idris, and I am a chemistry PhD student in the Patterson lab. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with honors from UCI in 2019. My current research in the Patterson lab focuses on investigating the encapsulation behavior of small molecules within nonionic block copolymer liquid droplets. I aim to utilize this knowledge to address issues related to drug delivery and environmental challenges, such as oil spill cleanup. Outside of academia, I enjoy spending time with my cat, cooking, and chatting with my nieces and nephew. I am also passionate about mentorship and actively participate in volunteering opportunities.
Jayme Chow (Copp Group)
My name is Jayme and I'm a chemistry PhD candidate in Professor Copp's lab. My research centers on the block-copolymer directed assembly of optically active nanoparticles into hierarchical assemblies. I earned my bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle, but I was born and raised in Newport Beach. When I'm not in the lab, you can find me cooking, hosting dinner parties for friends and family, or out and about exploring new places to eat.
