Eiichiro Oda, One Piece 2019
One Piece follows the story of a young man, Monkey D. Luffy, and his pirate crew who challenge the overwhelmingly strong power of the world government. In this show many characters have other-worldly powers that enable them to overpower and challenge others. Some of these powers even consist of turning into an animal. These abilities allow them to overcome hurdles set upon and fight for freedom against the world government. One Piece is meant to be an adventurous show, with every season introducing us to a new location with different characters.
It goes without doubt that One Piece is my favorite show of all time, and it just so happens to connect with the theme of Humanities Core. Over the course of my Humanities Core journey, I realized that I am most interested in the animalization and dehumanization of people. As stated above this show has has characters that turn into animals or a hybrid of animal and human. One of the crew members of Luffy's is a human/animal hybrid. He has the power to act to act like human, in terms of speaking and walking like one. However, he still keeps his reindeer like appearance, which I think shows the connection between animals and humans we learned last quarter.
In the show there is a obvious hierarchy set, with a certain group of people called "celestial dragons" being placed at the top. The people have more power than the world government themselves and even have the ability to buy slaves. These celestials dehumanize the slaves by riding on them and even labeling them with hot iron on their backs. These people can do whatever they want, whether it be kill someone that walks on the same piece of grass, or even enslave someone they feel like. I believe this topic has a lot of potential which is why I am excited to continue researching it.

Currently I am planning on using the actual show as a primary source. I am still looking for secondary sources that can help me support and explain my ideas. The show has everything already plotted out; animals, people, and power. Now, I just need to find more supporting text. This was written on 4/1/22.
