The manga adaptation of One Piece, created by Eiichiro Oda, was released in 1997, and the anime adaptation was released in 1999 by Toei Animation. A Japanese comic is referred to as manga, and a Japanese animated show is referred to as anime. One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, who dreams of becoming the world's most powerful and free person, the "Pirate King." They travel over the world's most treacherous sea, the Grand Line, with his crew of buddies known as the "Straw Hats." It is considered dangerous since it is infested with pirates and has strange weather patterns, making it impossible for ordinary pirates to exist there. They come across hostile pirates, criminals working for organizations, marines, corrupt officials of the "World Government" (picture 2), and more on their voyage. There are registered pirates (picture 3) in One Piece who work with the government to keep the world safe, but these pirates just write it off as an excuse to continue their unlawful activities. Along with that, there are "Emperors of the Sea" (picture 4), some of the world's most powerful individuals whom the government ignores. The pursuit of dreams is a major theme in the anime due to each crew member having their own purpose in life they want to fulfill. The journey of Luffy and his companions is still running rampant to this day with no sign of stopping.
Introduction to the Research
Title - "The representation of real world dehumanization and manipulation through politics and corrupt powers in One Piece"
Evolution of the Research Question - I knew when I started my research that I wanted to use One Piece as my primary source since it reflects a part of myself. But, in order to truly use this material, I needed to come up with a viable research question. At first, I considered the question, "What aspects of actual life does anime draw inspiration from when developing a story?" After re-watching significant footage and events from One Piece, I realized I wanted to concentrate on the political side of the story. As a result, the focus of my inquiry switched to "How does One Piece's politics relate to real-life politics? Are the corrupt aspects of it also regarded as real-life inspiration? "..
My Argument - In my research paper, I argue that the events of dehumanization and manipulation that occur in our world as a result of corruption and politics are directly reflected in the world of One Piece. Many sequences in the anime show corrupt World Government members abusing their power for personal wealth and power. One Piece creates a political government that is both abusive and corrupt, demonstrating how our current political system works.
The video below depicts an example of dehumanization perpetrated by a strong politician who has shown no regret for his acts. However, one of Luffy's crew members, Zoro, unwittingly violates this authority by stepping through the Celestial Dragon's route (the person of power that is depicted in the video). At the timestamp of 1:52-2:03, dehumanization is shown with a Celestial Dragon riding a human like a horse. This scene exemplifies how we often protest and disrupt the social order created by the government and those in positions of power in order to bring about change. Even though some are scared of the repercussions.
You'll notice that only one of the scholarly conversations I linked in the slides above discusses the politics of One Piece, while the others don't. Even yet, the one that does genuinely discuss politics is limited to a single segment of the anime. The majority of the scholarly discussions avoid discussing the show's political and corrupt features. However, this is where I will enter the discussion, as I intend to write on the political and corruption aspects of One Piece rather than the cultural aspects. I believe I will be able to contribute to a topic that does not receive nearly as much attention as it deserves. One Piece is one of the most popular anime series in the world, and the fact that no study topics on the show's politics and corruption have been written inspired me to write about it.
Animals, People, and Power is the theme for this year's humanities core, as you may know. One Piece's plot illustrates this theme by depicting political figures abusing their authority by animalizing ordinary people and murdering them for no apparent cause. In this anime, people in positions of power lead to corruption, which leads to abuse, which leads to animalization. Overall, One Piece draws together all three humanities areas and integrates them in order to make an outstanding story. Since 1999, One Piece has released weekly episodes every week, and it continues to do so now. The anime has a huge influence on society due to its extreme popularity, with it being the most popular show in Japan. This implies that it should be thoroughly examined in order to comprehend the values and connections it establishes.
