LEARN IN COMMUNITY
What can I expect from the courses?
Courses are DEEP DIVE learning opportunities.
Each workshop comprises of 3-4 sessions that meet for 2 hours each time.
Over the course of these 6-8 hours, facilitators will cater their support to the needs of their participants, giving you the opportunity to implement what you are learning right away.
Each workshop differs in what they offer and how the sessions are structured. However, across all of our workshops, facilitators will guide you through identity-centered community builders, modeling of practices, and support you in the creation of your own action steps and/or lesson plans.
Most courses are offered virtually and synchronously.
Those offered in-person only are noted as such in the descriptions below.
COURSE OFFERINGS
NGSS Certification: Tier 1
This program will support science teachers in foundational understanding of three-dimensional instruction and learning. Teachers will engage in activities that align with the Next Generation Science Standards and center students’ thinking, experiences, language, and cultures. These sessions will offer opportunities for teacher reflection and implications for the classroom. Teachers are eligible to purchase 2 quarter units upon completion of the program through UCI Division of Continuing Education.

UCI Science Project is grounded in research-based educational practices informed by partnerships within and beyond UCI. We understand the paradigm shifts needed for the Next Generation Science Standards to prepare studnets for the 2st century. Our goal is to support educators as transformative leaders who build capacity in their schools through empowering learning experiences. We are firmly committed to addressing racial, social, and environmental injustices through collaborative efforts that position educators as agents of change for community action.

The True Cost of Chocolate:
Developing Social-Justice Informed Curriculum
In these three sessions, participants will work with peers to develop a lesson plan that is rooted in finding solutions for environmental and social issues as they pertain to the mass production of an ubiquitous sweet treat: chocolate. Their lesson will aim to help their future students propose solutions to real-life problems associated with the cocoa industry while meeting the Next Generation Science Standards of the given discipline.
This course is facilitated by CalTeach alumni!

Madeline and Reem have just finished up their first year as official science teachers here in SoCal. Recent graduates of teh CalTeach Program, they hope to provide a space for future teachers to develop informed curriculum helping students relate to the science they learn and feel like agents of change in their communities and world.

Restorative Responses and Practices While Under Pressure
In these sessions, attendees will learn concrete strategies for how to implement restorative justice practices to navigate and facilitate hard conversations with students. As change agents, we have a responsibility to equip our students with methods on productive, respectful discourse with those that have opposing views and arguments.
Pleas note: Due to the nature of this course, registration will be limited to 30 seats.

Tanya Suzuki is a Restorative Justice Practices Consultant. For the past 24+ years, she's been working in schools across LA and currently provides support for educators, youth and schools as a Restorative (Justice) Practices educator/consultant, coach, and trainer/facilitator. She also works privately with clients in my practice of coaching and facilitating harm/repair circles.

GOOGLE CERTIFICATION
In this workshop, teachers will learn about the various Google tools and features to implement technology into the classroom. Teachers will also take a certification exam at the end of the PD to become a Google Certified Educator.

Keeping Kids In Our Classrooms: Empowering Educators to Create Inclusivity
In these four sessions, attendees will learn concrete strategies for how to tend to power dynamics in the classroom, lesson planning to be culturally responsive, redirecting behaviors, and restorative justice practices.

Dr. Morgan Goering started her journey in education in a middle school, mathematics classroom in Southern California. She has been in education for over a decade serving as a classroom teacher, department chair, site-based PBIS coach, instructional coach, climate and culture specialist, vice principal, assistant director of student support services, and educational consultant. Morgan is a passionate educator seeking the ability to support and create positive change in education. She understands that the realm of education will continue to change with the ever-changing students and educators in our nation’s classrooms. As CEO of Making Champions of Change, an educational consulting company, she works to empower educators by training and coaching teams in their implementation of MTSS, PBIS, Restorative Practice, and many more.

Using Data and Context in a Math Class Responsively and Responsibly
In these 4 sessions, learn how to create culturally responsive math lessons that align with the guidelines of the new CA Math Framework. Learn about how the principles of Dr. Lou Matthews' inspiring Hope Wheel can enlighten the way we think about the outcomes of a culturally responsive math lesson. How can we engage learners in mathematics that center resilience, agency, advocacy, joy?

Naehee Kwun is a current UCI CalTeach coordinator and lecturer! She has taught high school mathematics for 15 years, and has spoken at math conferences across the country. Her career in education has been driven by her commitment to social justice and strong belief in the power of our youth.

QUEER TALK: EDUCATORS ENABLING ACTION (QTEEA)
Learn about how to be aware of and inclusive of the intersectionalities of our students' complex identities. This course is structured as learner-centered and will include many opportunities for dialogue among the community.

Shelby Anderson, an innovative U.S. History teacher and entrepreneur in Orange County, is renowned for her engaging approach to education. With a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of California-Irvine, she teaches AP Human Geography, Global Studies, U.S. History, and coaches Mock Trial at Laguna Beach High School. Shelby's dedication to creating immersive learning experiences has earned her numerous accolades, including the Disney D100 Teacher Celebration Winner, CA Council for the Social Sciences Rookie of the Year, and congressional recognition for her teaching methods. Beyond the classroom, she is actively involved in professional development, focusing on museum education, archiving, and preservation stewardship. As a distinguished Master Educator at the National WWII Museum, Shelby applies her expertise in women's WWII military history to develop educational programs and curriculum.

UNGRADING FOR DISRUPTION, DECOLONIZATION, AND DREAMING
Join wondering and dreaming sessions with educators who have been engaging in ungrading practices over the last few years.
This program will be broken down across 4 days of wondering about tensions, challenges and success of ungrading approaches. Topics discussed will include navigating individual and student facing journeys of ungrading, data driven approaches to ungrading, and ungrading in STEM and VAPA. We welcome experienced, novice, and aspring ungraders.
