Ungrading as a Path to Meaningful Learning (introductory workshop)
(advanced workshop)
What can I expect from the courses?
Courses are DEEP DIVE learning opportunities, following our 2-2-2 model.
Each workshop comprises of 3-4 sessions that meet VIRTUALLY for 2 hours, 2 times a week, for 2 weeks.
Over the course of these 6-8 hours, facilitators will cater their support to the needs of their participants, giving you the opportunity to implement what you are learning right away.
Each workshop differs in what they offer and how the sessions are structured. However, across all of our workshops, facilitators will guide you through identity-centered community builders, modeling of practices, and support you in the creation of your own action steps and/or lesson plans.
Most courses are offered virtually and synchronously.
The only exception is the course offered by OCHR: Everyday Restorative Practices. Click on "courses" below to learn more.
This program will support science teachers in foundational understanding about and implementation of the NGSS. Teachers will develop an understanding of how students learn to deconstruct the NGSS. They will also center instruction around sense-making to align to the next-gen science standards. Teachers will also leverage the NGSS to support every student as equity centered educators. Teachers are eligible to purchase 2 quarter units upon completion of the program through UCI Division of Continuing Education.
This program is grant-funded for CalTeach and MAT students. If you are outside of UCI, the registration link will lead you to their website for pricing and other program offerings. Webpage for more info: bit.ly/UCISPNGSS

Join a collaborative group of teachers in planning your progressive grading or ungrading classroom systems for next year. Johanna and Doron have both gone gradeless in secondary science and higher education classrooms. We will guide you through ways to reduce oppressive grading and give you time to (re)construct your philosophy and syllabi. Peers and facilitators will work in collaboration: providing feedback, support, and guidance as you build a plan to center learning and de-center grades.
Johanna began as a traditional grader, using points to track student work and removing points for behaviors like late work. She started her progressive grading journey in STEM by switching to standards-based grading and then quickly changed to a mastery-based system. After much reflection on the positives of those changes, she finally decided to do away with grading work all-together, hoping to free her students from "the game of school."
This is pushing students to deeper learning, and greater ownership of their understanding. She used to believe that "ungrading" couldn't be done in STEM and that only magical unicorn teachers could pull it off. She's here from the other side to tell you that students will be MORE motivated to learn without grades! This workshop is available to help you change the grading practices of your classroom in a way that align with district requirements and your pedagogical beliefs all with non-judgmental community working to make learning the goal for all students.
Facilitator: Johanna Brown

Deep Dive WORKSHOP: 4 sessions, 2hr each
Participation Mode: Virtual Zoom sessions
As educators committed to student learning in equitable and just ways, we seek to explore and develop approaches to collecting and analyzing data to determine the affordances and constraints of ungrading (as a whole and individual components).
This workshop is designed for two populations. First we aim to deeply engage educators who have already used, grappled with, and experienced ungrading approaches and are collecting data, or puzzling with what data to collect to evaluate their work. We additionally welcome educators who are looking to engage in ungrading and want a deeper dive into the use of data in the work.

If you are curious about ungrading and would like to learn about what it means to de-center grades in your classroom, it is highly recommended that you attend Johanna Brown's introduction to ungrading prior to attending this course.
Facilitator: Ungrading Collaborative
Dates: July 5, 7, 10, 12
