Why Is This Important Fifty-Four Years later?
Reflecting on the emergence of environmental consciousness with the Santa Barbara Oil Spill of 1969, it is essential to internalize the impact of how visual and print media and collective action of environmental groups like (GOO), Americans across the nation witnessed the violence of cheap energy. Five-four years later after the Santa Barbara Oil, there is an overwhelming scientific consensus that human activities, primarily burning fossil fuels, are driving climate change. China currently produces the highest carbon emissions globally, followed by the United States and India. However, the U.S. is the most prominent historical contributor to climate change and has significantly higher emissions per capita according to NPR.

Nevertheless, it is essential to reflect not only on the impact of an ecological disaster from decades ago but also on how our generation can implement similar strategies to help do their part in committing to ecologically friendly actions ourselves, as well as put pressure on public officials we elect to pass new environmental laws to combat climate change issues.
We can do our individual by changing habits in our daily lives and thinking more environmentally friendly.
