Analysis:
Local Santa Barbara Channel 3 News station arrived on the Channel Santa Barbara to capture aerial and close footage of clean-up efforts. The news station captured clean-up efforts from Union Oil workers as they tossed barrels of straw into the ocean. As the union workers tossed more straw onto the ocean, waves began to bring more oil onto the shoreline. An aerial shot showed a large dark mass of oil sitting in the middle of the channel. Another close-up footage of the shoreline captured various birds who shook their wings and rubbed themselves against the sand. The seabirds tried to rid themselves of the oil that covered and stained their bodies. Bud Bottoms, Co-founder of Get Oil Out! (GOO), recalls participating in rescue efforts in the channel before co-founding (GOO). He remembered birds emerging from the water, and as they tried to rid themselves of oil covering their bodies, they would only ingest more oil. As he and other volunteers took birds to clean up stations to help shed them of oil, he does not recall saving any birds that day.
